The 6 (Wrong) Questions Men Love to Ask About Women. The last two particularly made me go "yes yes yes!"

For a site largely about superheroes, boobs, video games, and rampaging animals, they do seem to have a lot of feminist writing.

That's because more and more of their writers ARE women now. When the site first launched all the writers were dudes and they have slowly been hiring on more and more ladies. Well maybe not ladies anymore than their male writers are gentlemen but you get my drift.

Which questions got all up in your grill? Some of us guys might want the tips.

Ooh I should have read that more carefully. The ast two. I have been guilty of a few of these and will try to remember this article in the future.

She is quite hot.

But then so are you, I don't think I am a feminist 'cause I like women of all shapes and sizes. I'm not gonna say that a woman's brain is always what attracts me first, 'cause that'd be a lie, but it is definitely on the lists of attributes I look for in what is attractive. Also I'd never call myself a feminist 'cause I'm to fond of making lascivious comments about women's bodies. Something of been told feminists don't do.

And anytime you need someone to appreciate your curves just ask. ;)

Feminists don't make lascivious comments about women's bodies?

Really?

Crap.

I missed another memo.

I used to live with a girl who constantly told me she was a feminist I was a evil misogynistic jerk, which didn't stop her from coming to live with me and my girlfriend when she broke up with my former roommate.
Long story short if I ever said anything even mild about a woman's appearance, even something like "my that young woman looks lovely" she would scream "SEXIST" at me and glare. Not that my comments were that innocent usually but still.

See, I don't think feminism should be anti-sex. Because that sorta defeats the point. I consider myself feminist and I enjoy girl brains and girl boobs (guy boobs I am not as big a fan of, except in figure drawing).

I was always under the impression that feminism is about celebrating sex and gender instead of ignoring or stifling it, and enjoying women for all of their various unique attributes. Physical attributes are part of that, aren't they? It's not like you can just pretend that no one in the world has genitals or something.

Maybe I shouldn't wax philosophical at midnight.

No I agree. I don't usually consider myself sexist. Shrug. I like women.

See you are actually being sexist here, and it troubles me that you can't see how blaming a woman for your misunderstanding of the plurality of feminism and reciting the 'hysteria' trope (she 'screamed' sexist at you? Really?) could be problematic. Oh noes, have I done the internets equivalent of screaming 'sexist' at you in allcaps? How will the feminist movement survive?!?!?!

From: [identity profile] corwin77.livejournal.com
If I am I apologize, but the fact is she did scream it at me on occasion. She literally raised her voice and yelled it. Not every time but still. It is not really my fault if she filled the sexist stereotype. I admit that beyond that one flaw she was a total and complete person. I could've added that she was an English major and like Indian Food and video games but that stuff didn't seem pertinent to the story.
And no you didn't scream, you brought up a valid point. If you had typed it LIKE THIS IT WOULD'VE BEEN SCREAMING!

I think looks are my top priority in a man, but matched by being nice, so sort of joint top. Brains are not as important as moral integrity, as I have enough brains to cope for myself, but also many secret evil tendencies, like wanting to kill lots of baddies, which are hopefully balanced by my going out with someone nicer...

So good looks, no big brain needed, kills bad guys, secret evil side? You want to date Ash from the Evil Dead movies?
Me too!

Not seen that, but was thinking if I have a son I might call him Ash, but was also thinking it is a good name for a girl...

My boyfriend is stunning looking but has learning disabilities, and at the same time is amazingly nice and sweet. I am the evil baddie-slaying wannabe!

Ah I figured it was a couples thing. You know you got dressed up real nice, had some wine, then went out and slew evil things.

As for Ash it technically already is a girl's name as the character's name is short for Ashley.

This is the second one I've read on there just today about how shitty 'nice guys' and 'men's rights' types are.

There's a surprising amount of good writing on there in general. They're starting to beat the Onion in the depth of their analysis. Some editor there has politics. I wonder who it is.

Why are you attracted to jerks, Spy?
Am I more attractive to you for having asked that?

Superheroes, boobs, video games, and rampaging animals are not inherently anti-feminist. Those are all things that I like, in certain contexts.

No, not that. An ACTUAL ugly girl.

This one. Thanks a lot, Hollywood.

Hmmm. Question 3 resonated with me, but the rest I find alien, probably because I don't know many people and avoid like hell any people who believe in or fit into such social stereotypes.

I don't get the idea that women who wear make up and shit are not doing it to attract men. I mean, I am sure some are not, and that some are trying to look attractive to women or just to anyone, and that some just enjoy dressing up, and some like a particular style or just want to hide spots, but surely under all these apparent reasons lies the fact that women are seen as sexual objects and men not much, and that women are made to feel shit if they do not conform to ideas of female attractiveness?

Date: 2010-10-06 11:20 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pofflewomp.livejournal.com
I agree that people who enforce it are often women, not men, but I am usually leapt upon for making such claims as it is argued that women cannot help it as they are vitcims of the huge social pressure to conform looks-wise, which is a fair point, but I wish both sexes would just get over it.
Most men I know prefer no make up on females. I think make up should just be for fun and worn by men too if at all.

I have crap skin so I do have covering up make up, but it usually looks worse than crap skin!

Every few months I toy with the idea of wearing make up and then panic because I think I would look and feel silly and also because once one has started it might be hard to stop and I could not afford to buy that much make up. But if I were paler in colouring I might not look silly wearing it. I conform to gender stereotypes in other ways, like removing leg and arm hair as my hair is thick and black, and removing my moustache, although I really am tempted to grow a big twirly one one day to shock people...
I hate the fact that I conform to social stereotypes, and I do feel it is because of what men think more than what women would think.
But I am very insecure about looks as I used to get men making nasty comments at me in the street before I shaved legs and arms!

I wouldn't wear make up even if it were in vogue for men to do so. I'd be absolute crap at applying it, I know from years of attempting to do nail polish right. Then again I am one of those boys who prefer unmake upped women. If you want to meh, I'll be complimentary and all, but don't do it on my account.

I've beem trying to talk my 6 year old niece out of wearing make up for months now...though that's really 'cause she wears too much.

YES on #5! It amazes me how much even tabloid magazines, with their lame features on stars not wearing make-up, half the time are showing pics of some celebrities who quite clearly are wearing foundation at the very least. I found talk of preferring the "natural look" pretty ridiculous most of the time because make-up does not always have to = bright red lipstick and blue eyeshadow, and I always get the impression that's what people are talking about when they say they don't like women wearing too much make-up

Not that I bother with make-up most days myself, but I generally do look better when I slap some on :P
