In this case, in order, the ARC for Constituent Service, the UK ARC for The Shattering Peace, and the Italian edition of the 20th anniversary reissue of Old Man’s War, all of which arrived within a couple of days of each other. It’s kind of neat to see my publishing history represented thus.

Riley: The problem is, what kind of girl is gonna go out with a guy who's acting all joe regular by day and then turns all demon-hunter by night?
Graham: Maybe a peculiar one.

I think like half the reason I'm posting because I'm like "oh good I don't need to write a real post about first two episodes of the Murderbot show, I can just point at [personal profile] hafnia's post and go: yes! that!"

(The show's good, I'm delighted by the vibe of it, the overall aesthetic is excellent and I love all the characters. Looking forward to seeing more <3)

Other things:

[community profile] auctionsasthreatened is a fandom event (technically a multifandom fanwork exchange) that is taking all the mental/social energy I have to spare and I'm not even doing much for it. xD But it's fun! Love to see everyone get enthusiastic about making things for people! Love the lack of anonymity that means potential creators can squee about a creator's requests with the creator! Love the general atmosphere of "here is an excuse to make friends"!

It's starting to get warm enough that I'm like "curses I must debate the merits of blankets (weight/pressure) versus the drawbacks of blankets (overheating)". This is simply the way spring-into-summer works, I have solutions, I will also whine dramatically about it for like a month until my body adjusts.

Yesterday at aikido, during test prep class, I was challenged to actually remember all five of the koshinage we learn. (which, like: often people only learn one or two! but I was taught five, so!) Two of them are easy (in that we practice them ever), but three of them like... never come up without someone specifically asking about them. (I remembered one and half-remembered the other two, which is about what I expected.)

The thing about one of them (ko-goshi) is that it's exactly like o-goshi except that instead of doing it around the waist you do it around the neck. (This means that it's really easy to do if you know o-goshi? Because there's a basic throw, iriminage, that gets you basically into position; you just gotta move where your body is so that uke goes over your hips instead of taking a straight fall back.) I remember learning this and whining about it because I do not like throws that care about the neck like that! I also did it in my shodan test because I ended up in the right position and was like "well, I do know this, and I know my uke will gleefully take the ukemi". And then I haven't really done it since? But it's right there in my body still, so easy to do, and the thing I'm like "huh" about is that apparently doing it no longer makes my brain make sad stressed whiny noises? Which is nice! But idk when or why that changed/happened.

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: We all probably have multiple WiPs, but which of yours has been hanging around longest, waiting to be finished?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

tom cruise with his hands on his hips

I love movies. A lot. Probably not as much as Mr. Movies himself, Tom Cruise, loves movies but I like to think that I am a close second to “people who love movies too much.” But Cruise’s love of theater snacks far outweighs my own.

I was lucky enough to attend the New York premiere for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. I got to cheer on my beloved Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) in the same room as Simon Pegg! It was great. But one thing I learned while there will, I fear, haunt me until the end of my days. And it was a simple off-hand comment from star Tom Cruise before the movie even started.

harrison ford wearing glasses

I am a simple girl. I love my hot guys and I love watching their movies. It’s as simple as that. But one thing I am now, fortunately, known for is my deep love of Harrison Ford. He is the man who made me realize that I loved guys, after all.

Ford, known for playing iconic roles like Indiana Jones and Han Solo, was at the Cannes Film Festival in 1982 for the film E.T. the Terrestrial. His ex-wife, Melissa Mathison, wrote the screenplay and while the film was out of competition, it did give me one of my favorite pictures of Harrison Ford of all time.

1) Just a quick post, mostly to say that I will be away for the next two weeks in case anyone comes looking for me.

2) Saw The Woman King which wasn't always an easy view but a wortwhile one. Good story and wonderful hand to hand combat scenes. I never thought John Boyega was all that attractive but have to say he looked magnificent in this part.

3) I've been meaning to do it for ages but finally got around to posting some of my beading projects over at Bling Share. A relative sent me a bunch of orphaned earrings she'd shoved in a drawer and wanted me to make something with them. I haven't finished all of them yet but it's been fun to try making different looks with them.

4) Also posted photos of a visiting swan to [community profile] common_nature as well as earlier ones with ducklings and goslings. Lots of pretty photos shared there regularly, such as these holloway pics by [personal profile] puddleshark.

5) Had our first corn on the cob since last year and the ears were all so sweet! We also got our first hummingbird visit since October as we were eating. If it wasn't for the fact that it'll be a high in the 50s tomorrow I'd say it was summer.

Bruce Springsteen standing on stage pointing

As is his way, Bruce Springsteen is talking about his love of America (and his dislike of Donald Trump). The “Born in the USA” singer has used his music as a way to praise his American roots while also criticizing our more negative parts. Trump doesn’t like it.

Currently, Springsteen is in Europe on his “Land of Hope & Dreams” tour and he had a rather colorful commentary on our current administration during his show in Manchester, England. He called the Trump administration “treasonous” and summoned the “righteous power of art, of music, of rock ‘n’ roll in dangerous times.”

Two cranky, one nice

I have a cold or allergies or something and it is making me cranky.

(I don't normally have allergies, but because I did so much cleaning on Saturday, I did stir up a fair chunk of dust. So like...maybe that's some of the problem? I did take a covid test Sunmorn, I should probably take another one in a day or two. Wastewater data is pretty low right now, so I'd be surprised if it was covid (I am still masking everywhere as per usual))

But yeah, my nose is either congested or runny, which is very annoying. Probably one of the solutions is to drink more water, sigh. My current main water bottle is full of flowers from the brunch last weekend. Which is very nice, but probably I should've gotten a vase in the first place.

Sidebar: I have seen the writing on the wall and begun writing on the new/current version of 750words, as the old version becomes increasingly deprecated and buggy. I hate it, so much, because interacting with things that are different is Wrong And Bad and also I am unthrilled with how excited Buster is about the concept of using AI as a cool assistant who will give you lovely reports about your writing. Honestly gross, if I want to go through my writing and see how things are different, I am perfectly happy to just literally do that. I do not need robots to tell me how to feel about the changes that have happened or to find the patterns that are occurring. Anyways, there's a nonzero chance I might abandon the site entirely and just start tracking my writing in .txt files on my laptop, which would be annoying in different ways.

Anyways, all this most recent complaint is because apparently the new site does not respond to ctrl-z. What, I say as heartily as I possibly can, the fuck. Like I know some of my crankiness is just your classic neurospice "things are different [and that's bad]" but I'm going to legitimately flag this as a Poor UX Choice.

At least he did make it so that you could type in plaintext instead of horrible automatic markdown bullshit that thinks it knows what you mean when you type *emphasis* _like this_ and quite probably thinks those two things are the _same fucking thing_ which I assure you they are *not*. Also, both of them are different from italicising or bolding, those are additional *different* forms of emphasis. The fastest way to make me stop using a website is to assume you know how I wanted to say the things I said.

(It's a fun game to take a chunk of text that has auto-formatted, like in Discord, and to attempt to put back in the proper emphatic markers. The best part is that I am frequently --I'd say between two-thirds and seventy-five percent-- correct if I later go through and edit in a way that shows me the original. No one else can probably tell the way my voice is supposed to be, but I usually can, and I like that fact about myself.)

Everything in the world is cranky because it is the end of the school year and I am burnt out, and I'm not actually a fan of this way of being. So how about this: There are these flowers that grow in big weird purple balls and they're extremely keen. Aliums, I think? Anyways, I've been seeing those pretty frequently out and about in the world and I like them quite a bit.

(it is a well established fact that I like things that are round, known also as "the strongest I've ever been fuckored". I also like flowers and bright colours! So these are very good. I will try and take a picture sometime soon.)

Okay, I am in the library for extra math help (and I have a kiddo! even if it's not my kiddos who I was expecting but some strange lovely kiddo from another class, that's still quite good!) and while I'm not actively helping kids, I am either going to play Balatro or try and work on the Endless Email Project. Wish me luck, it's been a while!

Shanks about to break hearts in One Piece episode 1112

Avast, me hearties! When it comes to matters o’ piratical power scalin’, there be heated debates from here to the furthest islands off the Grand Line! Many a pirate claims to be the “World’s Strongest”, but who has truly earned to the lofty title? While the seas of One Piece are host to all manner of mighty men capable of manhandlin’, only a handful of swashbucklers can boast to be the most braulic of all. Unlike the fabled One Piece itself, we’ve found the sea’s most formidable fighters, and arranged them neatly in a list. Here they are, the 10 most powerful pirates in One Piece, ranked.

10. Dracule Mihawk

Mihawk from 'One Piece' smiling
(Toei)

Dracula Mihawk is a grand master swordsman capable of eclipsing all others, due in no small part to the fact the he possesses one of the few Supreme Grade swords in all of existence – Yoru. It’s the size of crucifix hanging in a cathedral, honed to atom-splitting sharpness. I struggle to think of an object that Mihawk hasn’t been able to cut – fleets of pirate ships, island sized icebergs, his opponents hopes – all been reduced to ribbons by the World’s Strongest Swordsman’s might. Remember when he beat Zoro with a knife the size of a pinky finger? Embarrassing. Like his blade, Mihawk’s skills have only sharpened as the series has progressed.
