Reading Wednesday
Jun. 23rd, 2021 07:53 amJust finished: Indigenous Storywork: Educating the Heart, Mind, Body, and Spirit by Jo-ann Archibald. I saw a version of this via some of her lectures on YouTube, but unfortunately for me and the oral storytelling tradition, I do absorb more through reading print. Anyway, it's a deep-dive into Indigenous storytelling traditions and storytelling as pedagogy, and it's excellent. I think I'm going to end up buying a copy for the class I'm teaching next year. It feels like something I'll have to revisit multiple times in order to truly absorb it.
Currently reading: A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine. People have been trying to get me to read this one since it came out without mentioning that the titular all-consuming space empire is based on the Aztecs. Seriously, friends. Learn how to sell me on a book! I just started reading it but it's pretty rad so far. An ambassador for a space station that does not want to be absorbed by the Teixcalaanli Empire is sent to its capital city, where her predecessor has just died. Unbeknownst to her hosts, she has an implant with his memories—granted, memories that are now 15 years out of date. Anyway, I'm a sucker for really elaborate worldbuilding and narratives about imperialism and culture, and so far this has both so I'm in.
