That is an old lady apartment. I would be scared if some chick took me home and had a crapper like that.

Jeez, let me tell you something about old lady apartments. When I got kicked out of my college house because all the other tenants graduated, I went looking for another place to live. Now as it happened, I thought I was quite lucky because my dad had just been laid off from working for a certain Torontonian bank for thirty years, and they'd given him a chunk of money as a goodbye present, and he wanted to buy a house with it and use the rent as a replacement for the rather pathetic excuse for a pension they'd given him. So we both had problems and we thought we could help one another.

One day we went to see a house in the Green End Road (home of the Sinister Greenend Organisation, which would have been really convenient). So we were thinking as we walked up the path. The door opened, and an old lady who could possibly have been young when the Romans settled the town welcomed us in, followed by a large and bounding black dog. I mean, a LARGE black dog. The kind that horror novels are written around.

So we go and look around. It is pretty much okay for a house where it is. The asking price is about average; she's wanting to sell it and move into assisted living. But it's not just that the wallpaper was done just like the wallpaper shown above in the style beloved of old ladies everywhere (why is this?! if I go to Tazakhstan will all old women decorate like this? if I decide to live as a woman and reach the age of eighty will I get the sudden urge to redecorate?). I could have lived with the wallpaper. I could even have changed the wallpaper, if I'd moved in. No, that wasn't the big deal.

The big deal was that dog. The dog must have pissed in every corner of every room of that house. The stench was almost indescribable: I can only assume that people's noses fail when they get older along with their eyes. If my dad had bought the house, it would have cost thousands and thousands to fumigate the place as though there'd been giant roaches or something.

That dog. The dog she kept shouting at and calling back by name. You want to know what the name of this big black dog was? It began with N, and there were five more letters.

My dad did not buy.

Yes yes yes! Though the all-linolium floors would no my nerves. I need carpets in bedrooms and living rooms. Especially in somewhere as cold as Ontario.

Actually, carpets are a semi-dealbreaker. We have two longhaired cats.

I think it looks cool. Couple of throw rugs and you got it. :)

No idea. But you can see where the floor in one of the bedrooms looks warped from the ovens. It does look cool, though.

I don't think it looks "old lady", I think it looks kind of "generic middle eastern". Is it all linoleum? I'd like that, it would be nice for my allergies, and easy to clean. a few throw rugs would make it bozy, and they'd be easy to wash.

Yeah. It's right near a mosque, so I think they were going for Middle Eastern and sort of got there.

I hate the floor, therefore I can't recommend. Other than that it looks ok, judging on what few picturs I can see.

See, the floor is what fills us with glee about the place. Otherwise it's too far from Sabo's usual haunts, lacks laundry facilities, and is generally not all that prepossessing a place. The floor, though, is extraordinary.

psychedelic bathrooms are cool.

MUSHROOMS!

It's funky and it's cheap (at least compared to what we pay in Canberra)...plus it's cool to live above a shop. You can't really do that here.

Oddly enough, I used to live above a halal pizza place (which later turned into a sushi place). It was kind of awesome. But no laundry.

Ugly floors, but large rooms are always good, and it has a really good looking kitchen.
And it is affordable, no?

You can always put down carpets and throw rugs.

And hey, Halal Pizza, Yum!

It's affordable, but we're not seriously considering moving there. The floors are the big draw for me—otherwise it's too out of the way and doesn't have laundry.

Yeah, I concur with mostly everyone above - throw rugs over mideastern linoleum, etc. - and $1050 split between two people for three rooms is pretty damn good, the real question is who is gonna win the fight over the use of the extra room (or are you thinking of bringing a third in and splitting the rent down to a nice dirt-cheap $350 each)?

And, again like they all said - living above a shop sounds cool. You can have band practices after 5pm as loud as you want! (You will of course want to convene a band, if you don't already have one.)

What we do now is use one spare bedroom for the library and one for the office. We're very collectivist about it.

Living above a shop is nice, but not so nice that I want to go to the laundromat.

Yes it is!

Well, for $1050 a month we'd both have enough extra cash to pay someone to come, take our laundry, do it, and bring it back all folded. We could even afford to pay someone who knows what not to put in the dryer.

Can we hire robot slaves?

i think it's freaking awesome. i would love to live there.
and pizza! come on!

That place is awesome! do it! and well. PIZZA. If the cool old-lady wallpapers (which are actually awesome, but then again I drink tea and read Austen so what do I know) do not convince you, the variety of toppings should.

We're not serious about it, regardless of how much we like the tiles.

It has potential, but you definitely must repaint those horrid walls.

I say, "Go for the Spanish restaurant look and paint the walls red."

No laundry, possibility of bugs with any place near a restaurant (though they're probably cleaner than a non-halal pizza place!), and bloody hot in the summer. I've done it before.

Before I saw the conversation bit, I was going to say something about there might be a problem with friends coming over and doing hallucinogens in the loo.

I love all of the beautiful prints - on the walls, on the floors.... Are you subletting from the halal pizzeria? If so, I kind of wonder if the patterns are meant to have religious significance.

They might be—or someone just really likes linoleum tiles.
