The latest Sherlock Holmes movie is over two hours of solid fanservice. My one critique is that they [spoilered] [spoiler] at the beginning (if/when you see it, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about) but the rest of the movie is just one awesome bit after another.

(It is apparently the weekend of "hey, there are movies in the theater that I actually want to see," go figure.)

And it's Canadian! (by the director of "Porky's" and "A Christmas Story" in fact) Maybe we have a Xmas activity here?

I eagerly await your commentary on the "Jack the Ripper was a Mason" angle. That aside, I would instantly proclaim James MASON (oh the irony) the best Watson of all time if I could think of another one.

I have it on VHS, so if we are where the VHS decks are, that would work. Otherwise, torrent away.

I will however mention that the film should be rated ICC for Interminable Courtroom Climax.

There'd better be some goddamned cocaine in the movie.

there was cocaine in the last one!

in this one he drinks embalming fluid, is that an acceptable substitute?

Date: 2011-12-17 04:49 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] icedrake.livejournal.com
So I went and looked up the composition of embalming fluid.
Formaldehyde, methanol waitwaitwaitWHAT?!

Methanol can cause destruction of the optic nerve in quantities as low as 10mL, and is potentially fatal at doses of 30mL (and "usually fatal" at doses of 80-150mL). My dad the chemical engineer tells the story of a chemical plant in Russia that used to wash its pipes at night with ethanol. The night-shift drunks figured this out and would secretly siphon off and drink some of it. One night, the plant was out of ethanol, so they used methanol. Five people died.

well, the bottle was labelled "formaldehyde" and some other stuff I didn't have time to read; maybe it was nineteenth-century embalming fluid and formaldehyde was the end of it?

From: [identity profile] icedrake.livejournal.com
The problem is, methanol is toxic because it metabolizes into formaldehyde. I'm in the "Holmes is fucking with Watson" camp, because I prefer it to the "script writer failed at basic googling" camp.

also it didn't really look like it was formaldehyde; it looked like it was vodka. XD

I mean not that I know what formaldehyde actually looks like

Date: 2011-12-17 05:40 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] icedrake.livejournal.com
All I have to go on is google images, but that suggests that formaldehyde is yellowish while the liquid in the bottle was clear. It also leads me to conclude that I need to brush up on my alcoholic beverages, since I failed to think of one that was completely clear. My shame is everlasting*.

I also cannot believe Watson would have failed to notice that, because formaldehyde and vodka sure don't smell alike

so clearly he was just playing along and the whole scene was a joke on all o us XD

but it is glorious that way.

...also, in retrospect, you know what I love? I love how Watson obviously hadn't seen Holmes's rooms since before the coke-and-jungle episode began, but he took the whole thing in stride complete with Holmes firing arrows at him from behind a pillar. Because they know each other THAT WELL.

Well, less 'behind' and more 'beside - he was standing between the pillar and a wall or bookshelf or something, painted to look like he was half pillar and half wall.

There is a running gag in the two movies that you only catch (well, *I* only caught) if you watch the two in close succession. Or you could just watch both trailers, since they put the joke in both.

(also, still not sure what the [spoilered] [spoiler] is, despite having seen the second one yesterday)

...I saw that in the trailer for the second one and caught it then, but didn't notice it in the movie itself.

maybe I was too busy giggling???

I am excited abou this film, but won't get a chance to see it until mid-January, so I hope it is still on then.

I am even more excited about the Nenedict Cumberbatch episodes coming out soon.

I have not re read Sherlock Holmes stories for some years, so much of the fan bitties will escape my notice. I like forgetting them enough to be able to reread them all excitedly.

I have been watching some of the Jeremy Brett series on tv over the last few months, though. I had a signed photo of him somewhere, but I don't know where it has gone.

That's interesting. It's probably different (less Fryed-out!) in Canada, but here in England Stephen Fry is now so ubiquitous that it is getting a bit much. He is on tv most days, chairs so many organisations, on radio a lot, reads many audiobooks, and seems to pop up to comment on just about every topic...and is out of favour a bit (thought still beloved) amongst my friends at the moment because of his appalling remarks about men having bigger sex drives than women.

So I have gone from massive, MASSIVE crush in my teens (I have signed photo of him somewhere too) to just thinking very fondly of him and wishing he'd wisen up a little.

But really he should always have been the one to play Mycroft. He just had to age into the part.

I'm sure it won't matter if he aint in the Cumberbatch ones (maybe he is...) as they are so very different anyway and so good in their own way. I find they are completely different but still so incredibly faithful to the feel that it is as if Victorian times have been brought to life by being updated. I don't mind their not being my picture of Sherlock Holmes, as the Jeremy Brett ones are that and they are so unlike each other.

My school was by Baker Street and my friend (LJ user) Cdaae and I used to be pretty obsessive fans. I had prints of all the Sidney Paget illustrations on my wall at college but they eventually fell to pieces.

Oh I haven't seen that! I am not very into John le Carre. Not particularly NOT into him either, just never started. I think I have read some and don't remember it! I wanted to see Tinker, Tailor... but my dad said it was a disappointment and boring, so I ended up not bothering. I will have to get hold of it.

I think Stephen Fry is probably sexist without being an arsehole. I have always felt he is so much the prep-public schoolboy he hasn't the worldly experience or depth that could come from it he would need to be the genius everyone claims he is. He is still adorable and funny (and annoyingly brainy), though. I think his sexism probably comes from utter thoughtlessness on the topic, which is very irritating, but then so many of his contemporaries from similar backgrounds are so very much worse that I find it forgivable. Or maybe I just still have that crush.

It was quite ridiculous, the men-bigger-sex-drives thing. I think it was on Twitter about a year ago. He said lots about how awful it is being as a male so sex-driven you can barely think of anything else. When people complained of his sexism he just didn't get the point (clearly had no inkling of the entire history and context behind the issue) and "apologised" by saying that he didn't understand why women would envy being so overwhelmed by sexual desire all the time...

...particularly characteristically lacking in self-awareness, I think, considering he spend years in his 30s claiming to have no sex drive and to be celibate, and considering his newly discovered sexual overdrive is presumably the result of his middle-aged acceptance and embracing of his sexuality. But there you go. I see it as part of his sweet bumbling more than arseholiness.
