Reading around that just made me realise how shockingly little I know about Canadian politics.

Sounds like an election right now might be a bad idea and let the Tories in, but for the Liberals it looks like a really bad idea, while the NDP is in a fairly good position in the polls. Hence, the NDP should be in a position to extract quite a lot of concessions from the Libs in return for keeping them in power a few months more - but they could use it as an opportunity to seize the moral high ground - "we want to see some serious action taken on Gomery" blah blah blah, and so appear as the people who are actually getting things sorted out.

But that's just from a very cursory visit to the Globe & Mail, the NDP website and Ipsos Reid. :)

That's pretty much what they did last time. The argument would be that the Tories have a good chance of winning an election, which is bad news for everyone (even for people who don't participate in electoral politics). The NDP, being the best of the mainstream options next to the Bloc, who don't run outside of Quebec, won't win a majority or even enough to be official opposition. And no one wants an election, especially not at this time of year.

The NDP managed to stave off a non-confidence vote that would have brought down the government by making a deal with the Liberals; it allowed them to get some concessions (although not nearly enough). On the downside, they lose political credibility by doing that. Not as much as the Bloc did by cutting a deal with the Tories, though. Ugh.

By "boneheaded immigration policies", do you mean those directly concerned with the process of allowing people into the country and to claim citizenship, or are you referring to the government's policies and/or malign neglect on matters of education, policing, employment and anti-racism, which disproportionately affect those who have recently emigrated to France?

Not remotely a boneheaded question. I was vague, and yes, referring mainly to the latter problem. I find it particularly disgusting that France would pillage Algeria, then use Algerian immigrants for cheap jobs, and when those jobs dry up, complain that said immigrants aren't assimilated enough. Feh.

Elections have to be called within five years of the last one, but they can be called sooner for all kinds of reasons. Our last one was 2004, so you can probably guess why no one's too eager to go all through that again.
