Date: 2005-11-04 07:04 pm (UTC)Sounds like an election right now might be a bad idea and let the Tories in, but for the Liberals it looks like a really bad idea, while the NDP is in a fairly good position in the polls. Hence, the NDP should be in a position to extract quite a lot of concessions from the Libs in return for keeping them in power a few months more - but they could use it as an opportunity to seize the moral high ground - "we want to see some serious action taken on Gomery" blah blah blah, and so appear as the people who are actually getting things sorted out.
But that's just from a very cursory visit to the Globe & Mail, the NDP website and Ipsos Reid. :)

Date: 2005-11-04 07:19 pm (UTC)The NDP managed to stave off a non-confidence vote that would have brought down the government by making a deal with the Liberals; it allowed them to get some concessions (although not nearly enough). On the downside, they lose political credibility by doing that. Not as much as the Bloc did by cutting a deal with the Tories, though. Ugh.
