My first weekend of relative freedom
Dec. 19th, 2009 11:06 pmFriday: Went over to
chickenfeet2003 and
lemur_catta's Kitten Kondo to have Thai food and watch Burial of the Rats.
Conclusion #1: All Thai food in Toronto sucks in comparison to what
chickenfeet2003 makes.
Conclusion #2: Though I adore Bengals and they are the cutest cats ever, I am probably too slow a runner to ever have one. My God, they're like tiny cheetahs crossbred with monkeys or something. Also did I mention adorable? Lady Jane is also a stunner.
Conclusion #3: You all need to see Burial of the Rats. It's based on a Bram Stoker short story, which is to say that the movie is about the time that Bram Stoker got kidnapped by scantily-clad swashbuckling Russian lesbians and almost cut off his own dong to spite the patriarchy. No rats are actually buried (though one, named Robespierre, gets beheaded by a tiny guillotine in possibly the best scene in any movie, ever), and the rats themselves only bury people in the metaphorical sense. But anyway, it's very fucking funny.
Today: Went over to
lienne's for pie (maple-syrup-caramelized pear), anime, and Settlers of Cataan.
Conclusion #4: I have to watch the rest of Darker Than Black.
Conclusion #5: Hah, my friends rock.

Also awesome is that I somehow still remember the Hanukkah prayer. It's like the only thing I know in Hebrew.
Also also, happy Hanukkah to those celebrating it.
* Long story.

New Vegetarian Recipe Night
Oct. 24th, 2009 12:07 amPictures and more recipes to come. It's 12 am and I'm lazy.
curgoth: Dal Puri
neeuqdrazil: Spanish Beans with Spinach
culpster: Spring rolls with shiitake mushrooms. (These were excellent; the curry ones blew my mind.)
I made aubergine and butter bean biryani, adapted from this recipe. It is super-easy and quick to make.
What you need
1 tin of butter beans (Or 2 tins if you like them) [I like them so I used two.]
8 oz. brown rice [I used basmati. I don't like brown rice.]
1 medium aubergine [I used a big one, and called it an eggplant.]
1 red pepper, sliced
1 tin chopped tomatoes
Poppy seeds
Mustard seeds
1 tsp. chili powder
1 tsp. turmeric
1 tsp. garam masala
1 tsp. ground coriander
1 tbsp. soy sauce
3 tbsp. natural yogurt [I used soy yogurt because we were expecting poor sick
corbet. Anyway, it's vegan if you either omit the yogurt or you use non-dairy yogurt, so might as well make it vegan.]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Slice the aubergine in two lengthways and sprinkle generously in salt. Leave for half an hour. This draws out the bitter juice from the aubergine. Rinse the aubergine and cut into cubes.
Heat a little vegetable oil in a large, heavy pan. Add poppy and mustard seeds and fry for a couple of minutes. Add the brown rice and cook for 3 or 4 minutes.
[At this point in the recipe,
sabotabby runs upstairs: "
zingerella! Is it okay to cook rice without water? Will something explode?" She assured me that it was possible so, gritting my teeth, I went back down to the kitchen to try it out.
Mix the spices in a cup and add a little water to make a paste. Pour the paste over the rice and add aubergine and red pepper. Drain the butter beans and add to the pan. Add the tinned tomatoes, 1 pint of hot water and soy sauce. Cover the pan, bring to the boil and simmer for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the rice is cooked. Add the yogurt.
The recipe said that it serves 2-4, which is not true. We had seven people over, six of whom had some, and there's enough for a few lunches left over.
I also bought frozen paneer paratha made by Deep Foods and they were incredibly tasty. So next time I'm down on Gerrard I need to get more. I didn't know pre-packaged food could taste so good.

death by chocolate
Jul. 8th, 2009 08:04 pmProbably not as good a way to die as it sounds. In fact I'm sure not.
In other news, I saw one guy wearing a Miskatonic University t-shirt on my way up to my doctor's appointment, and another guy wearing a Gallifrey University t-shirt on the way back.
Okay, homework time,

So far, so good
May. 16th, 2009 12:14 pmWoke up this morning(ish), cleaned up puke on my carpet (not mine, Luna's; I apparently wasn't that drunk last night), and had a breakfast of facon with maple syrup, tomatoes, and coffee (at the kitchen table not in front of the computer).
I don't remember much of last night but it seems I had a good time! And you were there, and you, and you...
Now I'm off to do something fun with my hair and maybe drop by the Tamil protest again if they're still around.

Attention local people or people who may venture somewhere in the Southern Ontario region in the near future!
One of my friends with whom I recently re-connected (Facebook is good for some stuff) is opening up a vegan restaurant in Stratford, Ontario. She's conducting a survey to get more information on customer needs and so on. If you have a few seconds, please fill it out:
Linkity-link.
Also, if you know people who might be interested in such an establishment, pass on the link.
This is particularly awesome because, well, we met when I was six and she was seven. And we used to play in her mom's garden and pick herbs and pretend that we were cooking in a restaurant. And now she is going to have a real restaurant completely full of food that I can eat.

Note to self:
Even when working hard, kimchi is not a proper dinner.
Yes, even though it's tastier than dinner would be. And yes, even though my fortune cookie said:
For a good cause, wrongdoing may be virtuous.
In other news, while I haven't finished it and must withhold judgment until such time as I do, Five Fists of Science may very well be the best comic book written by anyone ever.
Finally, see what gay marriage leads to?

Parkdale adventures
Jul. 3rd, 2008 11:10 pmGet thee to M&B Yummy at Queen and Dufferin. It is holyshitamazing. Ethiopian is generally pretty veg-friendly but imagine being able to go in and order anything on the menu, even dishes that are traditionally meat.
Warning: It is still Ethiopian, which means that the injera will continue to expand after you feel full and then you'll have a stomachache when you get home. Ow ow ow.
Is it me, or is it sort of in poor taste for Coors Light to put up an ad in a bus shelter outside of CAMH that reads: "Yes, the bottle is trying to tell you something."?
