Let's go with It Could Happen Here's "The Canadian Election: NOTHING EVER HAPPENS," which is Canadian-born Gare's attempt to explain what just happened to ICHH's primarily American audience. It's nothing you don't know if you either live here or read my blog, but it's actually a useful reminder that the international media (including independent media) is framing our election very differently than we are. I don't really disagree with any of Gare's analysis, beyond that sometimes they screw up the names of political parties.

But you know. I've been going through a stressful time lately, and I'm often waking up sad and frustrated by my own wasted potential. And then I remember that Poilievre lost his own seat and it makes me happy for a good five minutes.

Ah, so we’re talking about two different things. I was reading “framing our election” as being about why people voted the way they did, while it actually meant “discussing the balance of power afterward”. That makes a lot more sense to me.

I’d actually prefer for Cons to switch, because the NDP are going to be the NDP regardless, but if we can coax some of the Cons less rightward, that’s something changed. But that depends a lot on what the Liberals end up doing with their power.

Good point - and yeah, either way, depends on what the details are of the deal they make + what policies they go with. I do think, if nothing else, they do realize housing is an existential issue for them? (eta: I'm worried they don't realize that electoral reform is as well; otherwise you end up w/the UK where all parties struggle to get >30% of the vote, but one of them still wins everything...)

It’s so tough because housing isn’t a federal-level issue; it’s (somewhat) provincial and (mostly) municipal. But everyone blames the federal govt for everything even when they’re not the right target, so yeah, they have to do SOMETHING about housing somehow.

It’s like when people yell at the federal level for how provinces have decided to spend their healthcare dollars. Doug Ford withholding massive amounts of dollars intended for Covid relief wasn’t Trudeau’s fault; Trudeau’s government sent the money to the provinces and then Doug pulled a stunt, and Trudeau got blamed.

(Not that I’m a Trudeau fan, but I’d prefer people get attacked for the bullshit they actually do, such as invading sovereign Indigenous lands. Also when people at the top get blamed for mid-tier decisions, it allows shitlords at the mid-tier to escape responsibility.)

I get what you mean about devolved powers but also at a certain point provinces do need to lean on municipalities blocking housing (TORONTO) and feds need to lean on the provinces. There are things they can do, which we are seeing but... I do wonder if it would have been politically viable to meddle earlier, before we were in a crisis...
